Easy arc ignition. Suitable for higher loads and even better arch stability. High resistance to welding bath contamination. Application for high alloy and stainless steels. Lightly radioactive. Despite the dangers that mildly radioactive electrodes can pose, many welders in Europe and Asia remain loyal to their "red" WTh20. Up to 4% by weight of thorium dioxide is added to WTh alloys during production. Ignitivity increases with higher oxide content compared to pure tungsten. Thoriated tungsten is used wherever a stable electron output is essential: plasma spraying, electron beam sources and also welding (see above).

Description

Tungsten electrodes for TIG welding Tungsten electrodes (non-melting) are used for TIG welding. The choice of electrode is determined by the current (AC/DC) and the type of metal to be welded. The correct choice of electrode will result in a significant improvement in weld quality. Tungsten electrodes are classified based on their chemical composition. Different oxides added to the base element (tungsten) affect the properties of the electrodes. Lanthanum is most commonly added to facilitate ignition (WL), zirconium to minimize the formation of tungsten inclusions in the weld metal (WZ), thorium (WT), cerium (WC), and rare earths (E3), in addition to the electrode containing pure tungsten (WP). The electrodes are marked with a code and colour. The code contains the letter W from the German Wolfram + the abbreviation of the legating element (e.g. L is lanthanum, Z is zircon,... ) + a number that expresses ten times the concentration of oxides, e.g. WC20 = Wolfram Cér 1,8 - 2,2 %. In the case of a pure tungsten electrode, WP stands for Tungsten Pure.
